The ATO’s New Small Business Newsroom Keeps Things Simple

Tax Compliance has been costing small to medium sized businesses up to $18.4 million per year, so in an attempt to cut call waiting times and provide consistent advice the Australian Tax Office (ATO) has developed an online ‘newsroom’ to inform businesses about their tax and super obligations.

The newsroom has been developed to make finding information on the ATO website easier and to reduce the amount of technical jargon business owners have to sift through to get answers.

In the Small Business Newsroom you can:

  • See the latest updates to tax and superannuation
  • View key dates for your tax and super, and save them to your own calendar
  • View and share interesting articles
  • Sign up to get the latest news delivered straight to your email address

There are four main sections to the newsroom:

  • Lodging and paying
  • Employers
  • GST and excise
  • Superannuation

There is also a calendar tab with important upcoming dates for BAS etc.

When you subscribe to the newsroom you get your tax and super info news by email. You can select topics that you are interested in receiving updates about and you can choose to stop receiving general ATO letters in the mail. You will still get the letters that relate to your specific tax affairs.

The ATO are inviting business owners to check it out and let them know any feedback you may have to help improve the service.
