AUSKey replacement

Out with AUSkey, in with myGovID

Australian business owners have been using AUSkey for the past 10 years to access government business services. At the end of March 2020, myGovId and the Relationship Authorisation Management (RAM) system will replace AUSkey and be the only way business owners can access online government services.

With the replacement of AUSkey a host of online government services will not be accessible without a myGovId or RAM. These include:

  • ATO: single touch payroll and lodging tax returns
  • Australian Business Register: updating the business ABN details
  • Department of Health Services- Centrelink Services

What is myGovID?

A myGovId is a secure proof of identity app. It is a straightforward way to verify who you are through an app on your smartphone. You would simply download the app and load your 100 points of ID to generate an authentication code, giving you access to the online government service you need.

What is RAM?

If you are running a business, there are occasions you may need to authorise an associate or professional services provider to access a government service on your behalf. Don’t worry, this doesn’t mean you need to handover your phone to your accountant to access the ATO portal.

The Relationship Authorisation Management (RAM) system is a service that allows the business owner to link their myGovId to an Australian Business Number (ABN) and manage who can act on behalf of the business online. This means business owner’s can grant their accountant access to the ATO portal for example, as well as set permissions to restrict them from accessing other online government services. What do I do now?

To set up a myGovId, first make sure your business details are up to date using the ABR website. Follow these 4 easy steps to get started:

  • Download the myGovId app onto your Android or IOS device
  • Create your myGovId by loading and verifying your 100 points of ID
  • Link your myGovId to your ABN via the RAM website
  • Authorise others using the RAM
